Unable to Travel to Korea — Holding on to a Second Chance

Yesterday, August 28th, I was invited to the EBS International Documentary Festival (EIDF) in Korea for my film Though I’m His Daughter (Soredemo Watashi wa). However, much to my disappointment, I was denied boarding and could not fly to Korea.

I am deeply saddened that I could neither set foot in Korea nor connect with the people there who have watched the film.

I so wish I could have gone…

Even so, unlike seven years ago, I was not alone this time. The lonely photos I had taken by myself after being denied boarding before were now replaced by pictures taken with those who stood by me. It was an indescribable source of strength.

While taking photos, I felt as if everyone supporting me through social media was there with us, which warmed my heart.

Even immediately after being denied boarding, I was able to see off Director Nagatsuka and the other film professionals heading to Korea with a smile.

I am filled with gratitude to everyone who always cares and supports me.

Although my wish to travel to Korea could not be fulfilled, today I will participate in the festival through an audio link. I truly appreciate your attention and support.

In fact, I was invited to this Korean film festival because Though I’m His Daughter was selected as one of just ten films out of over 500 submissions.

And astonishingly —

If my film is chosen as one of the five award-winning works among these ten, the festival will offer me a second chance! I could be invited to the Korean festival once again!

It would be an immense joy to receive such an opportunity.

Until then, I must clarify how the name “Rika Matsumoto” is perceived internationally from Japan. Until Japan made the completely unfounded claim that I had been a cult executive, I had never once been denied entry.

I will continue to do my best, and I sincerely hope for your ongoing support and encouragement!
